A grandmother and her five-year-old grandchild died after they were swept away by strong river currents while attempting to cross a river in Digos City, Davao del Sur, authorities said.

According to a report aired by GMA Regional TV on “Balitanghali” on Thursday, the victims were on their way to attend a birthday celebration of a relative on Tuesday afternoon when the incident happened.
The Digos City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the grandmother was crossing the Matti River with her two grandchildren, aged five and seven, when the water suddenly became stronger and more dangerous.
The raging current reportedly carried away the grandmother and the younger child. Hours later, rescuers recovered their bodies.

Meanwhile, the seven-year-old grandchild managed to survive the incident.
Authorities have yet to release further statements from the grieving family as they continue gathering information regarding the tragedy.
In a separate incident, flooding also hit Barangay Capayuran in Pigcawayan, Cotabato after a dik*e in the area was damaged due to continuous heavy rains.
The dik*e had been serving as protection against the overflow of nearby rivers and creeks. Following the damage, floodwaters rushed into parts of the community, affecting residents in the area.
Local authorities immediately conducted clearing operations while assessing the extent of the destruction caused by the flooding.
Residents, meanwhile, are urging the government to immediately repair the damaged dik*e to prevent further flooding, especially as heavy rains continue in several parts of Mindanao.
Meanwhile, in Bokod, authorities arrested a 37-year-old man over the alleged killing of his 74-year-old mother after human remains were discovered in a shallow grave by a concerned resident. Investigators later found suspected blood traces and other pieces of evidence inside the house where the suspect and victim reportedly lived together. The recovered materials are now undergoing forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
In another incident, emergency responders in Zamboanga City were called after a massive python was spotted inside a parked vehicle. The Bureau of Fire Protection eventually removed the nearly 10-foot snake safely, with videos of the unusual rescue operation quickly circulating online because of the shocking discovery.
Meanwhile, environmental authorities in Aurora successfully returned a Northern Luzon giant cloud rat to the wild. The rare species, known to exist only in the region, is considered vital to the balance of forest ecosystems and biodiversity preservation.
Officials from the affected areas continue to remind the public to stay alert and cooperative in matters involving public safety and wildlife protection. Authorities are still conducting investigations into the criminal case, while conservation groups continue promoting proper care and protection of endangered animals and their natural habitats.
