The victim, identified as 80-year-old Serafin Lapitan, was rushed to the hospital after experiencing severe breathing difficulties at home. His daughter, Andrea Lapitan, shared that her father regularly used a nebulizer every afternoon to manage his asthma condition.

However, on Friday, their barangay was included in a scheduled rotational power interruption, causing their electricity supply to suddenly go out during the time her father needed treatment.

She explained that the family initially thought the outage would only last for a short period, so they waited for the electricity to return before using the nebulizer again.

“Hinihintay ng papa ko na magkaroon ng kuryente, kasi akala namin saglit lang siya mawawala. Pero inabot siya ng mahigit tatlong oras,” she added.

Electricity was restored shortly before 6 p.m., allowing Serafin to finally use the nebulizer again. However, his condition had already worsened by then.

“Sumagot na po siya na hindi na po niya kaya,” Andrea recalled.

The family immediately decided to bring him to the hospital, but while they were leaving their compound, the elderly man collapsed. He was later declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Meanwhile, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said the Visayas grid was placed under yellow alert from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, while the Luzon and Mindanao grids remained under normal conditions.
