In a dramatic turn of events at the Philippine Senate on Wednesday, May 13, Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa issued a fervent plea to the public to gather in a peaceful prayer vigil outside the Senate premises.

The appeal came through a two-minute video message as reports circulated that law enforcement operatives were prepared to arrest the senator immediately following the day's legislative session.
The tension-filled announcement was made after the lawmaker received intelligence regarding the presence of authorities within the vicinity.
In a video showing the senator, he said he was alerted that teams from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) were moving to implement an arrest order.

In the video, the senator was heard making a direct appeal to his followers, emphasizing that he was not calling for an uprising but for spiritual and moral support.
"Hindi po ako nananawagan ng marahas na pag-aaklas. Ako po ay nananawagan ng isang peaceful na prayer rally dito sa harapan ng Senado. Mag-vigil tayo dito sa harap ng Senado. Sana po ay samahan ninyo ako sa panalangin dahil may impormasyon tayong natanggap na aarestuhin tayo pagkatapos ng session na ito," the senator stated.
The situation escalated after several days of high-stakes drama, which included the senator being chased through Senate corridors by NBI agents earlier in the week, an incident captured on CCTV and widely shared online.
The Senate has since placed the lawmaker under protective custody. This move followed the unsealing of an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant and a leadership change that saw Alan Peter Cayetano assume the Senate Presidency.
In another report, it noted that supporters began arriving at the Senate gates shortly after the video went viral.
These individuals, some carrying candles and religious icons, expressed their intent to stay "as long as necessary" to prevent what they described as a "warrantless and unjust" operation against a sitting official.
Despite the heavy presence of police around the area, the lawmaker maintained his stance of non-violence, urging those who would join the vigil to keep the peace.
As of Wednesday evening, the Senate remained on heightened alert, with the mambabatas staying within the safety of the chamber while legal experts debated the validity of the arrest attempts.
Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, born January 21, 1962, is a retired police official and a current member of the Philippine Senate, serving since 2019. He rose to prominence as the chief of the Philippine National Police from 2016 to 2018, leading the administration's nationwide anti-drug efforts. He also led the Bureau of Corrections briefly in 2018 before transitioning into his career in legislation.
Meanwhile in related news, actress Janine Gutierrez took to social media to voice her opposition following Senator Ronald dela Rosa's plea for public solidarity. The lawmaker’s request for support centered on themes of national loyalty and his service to the Filipino people. The actress countered his appeal by highlighting the plight of individuals who lost their lives during the controversial anti-drug operations. Her remarks ignited a fresh wave of digital discourse concerning government transparency and the quest for judicial accountability.
Senator Bato also became the center of conversation on “It’s Showtime.” Vice Ganda poked fun at the widely shared footage of Senator Bato navigating a tense moment within the Senate. The host humorously alluded to the lawmaker’s hurried movement and accidental trip on the stairs that was caught on camera. The studio audience erupted in cheer as Vice incorporated Anne Curtis into a playful skit mimicking the viral incident. The comedic commentary coincided with high-stakes reports regarding a potential enforcement action linked to international legal probes.
