The peaceful evening at the residence of the veteran journalist was shattered by such act of violence that has sent shockwaves through the journalistic community and the province of Aklan.

The 89-year-old former OIC mayor of Kalibo and Chairman Emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), affectionately known as "Tay Johnny," was fatally shot inside his home in Villa Salvacion, Andagao, Kalibo, at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

According to initial police reports, corroborated by information from Dayang’s grandchild relayed through RMN DYKR Kalibo, the esteemed journalist was resting on a rocking chair when a lone assailant, riding a motorcycle, approached his residence and fired shots.

The gunfire struck “Tay Johnny” in the neck and back. Despite being rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The news of the veteran journalist’s killing has been met with widespread condemnation and calls for a swift and thorough investigation.

The Kalibo police have launched an active inquiry into the incident to determine the motive behind the attack and to identify the perpetrator.

He was also the founding president of the Federation of Provincial Press Clubs of the Philippines and a former publisher of the Philippines Graphic magazine.

Beyond his significant contributions to the media landscape, “Tay Johnny” also served as the OIC mayor of Kalibo during the administration of former President Corazon Aquino, highlighting his deep engagement with public service.

At the time of his passing, he held the position of secretary of the Catholic Mass Media Awards.
