Remulla's call comes in response to Roque’s announcement that he intends to seek asylum in the Netherlands.
Speaking at the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum on Wednesday, Remulla urged Roque to “face whatever charges are filed against him. Face them, right? He should act like a proper Filipino.”
This statement was made in reaction to Roque's declaration that he plans to apply for asylum in the Netherlands, citing alleged government persecution.

Roque also stated that he wishes to defend former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained in The Hague in connection with charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Remulla expressed his skepticism regarding Roque's intentions, stating, “Nothing has even happened yet, and he's already trying to escape. No, he should face it. He's a lawyer, yet he doesn't follow the law. He should follow the law, he should face it.”
Roque has been linked to alleged traff1cking operations at the raided Lucky South 99 POGO firm in Porac, Pampanga.
He has denied these allegations and filed a counter-affidavit. Additionally, he faces an arrest warrant from the House Quad Committee for contempt, stemming from his alleged refusal to submit documents related to his wealth.
Remulla also dismissed Roque's relevance to Duterte's ICC case, stating that Roque is “irrelevant.” “He's trying to push his face in to make himself relevant. He's not needed here,” the secretary asserted.
Vice President Sara Duterte also clarified on Tuesday that Roque is not part of her father's defense team at the ICC.
She explained that the decision was made to avoid complications due to the uncertainty surrounding Roque's status in the Netherlands.
“We want the lawyers to really focus on the case. Right now, he’s, I heard, applying for asylum. He publicly announced that already. We want him to focus on his asylum, and we want our lawyers to focus on the case,” Vice President Duterte stated.
Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Roque should prioritize defending himself before attempting to defend others.
“Right now, perhaps you've heard that Atty. Harry Roque will no longer be part of former President Duterte's legal team. Perhaps if he said he's there, he won't come home because he'll represent his president, it would be better for him to represent himself first, defend himself before defending someone else,” Castro said during a press conference.
At this time, comments from Roque regarding Remulla's and Castro’s statements are awaited.
