A Pinoy SEA Games gold medalist was brutally killed by a suspect while sleeping in the living room of the hosue of a barangay official.

In a report by ABS-CBN, authorities identified the victim as Mervin Guarte, a 2023 SEA Games gold medalist

Guarte won two gold medals for the Philippines during the SEA Games in 2023 and in 2019.

He also won two silver medals during the 2011 SEA Games.

An enlisted personnel in the Philippine Air Force with the rank of Airman First Class, Guarte was 32 at the time of his death.

Philippine sports officials expressed shock and sadness over the incident.

“We are still in shock, very sad,” Alberto Agra, the president of the Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation, said.

Police reports say that the unidentified assailant stabbed the Pinoy athlete to his chest while he’s sleeping in the living room of the home of Brgy. Councilor Dante Albo Abel around 4:30AM.

Reports say Guarte was still able to call for help and was thus rushed to a hospital where he eventually succumbed to his wounds.
