A routine morning commute to school turned into an unimaginable nightmare for two college students in Barangay Bulad, Isabela, Negros Occidental, after an Army truck accidentally crashed into their motorcycle this Wednesday.

The devastating incident claimed the life of a 22-year-old student, leaving his family in deep shock and mourning over a young life cut entirely too short.

According to a report by the Daily Guardian, the tragic collision occurred around 10:00 a.m. on a usually busy stretch of road.

The 22-year-old student was driving the motorcycle with his 21-year-old classmate riding behind as his passenger.

The two young friends, who are both residents of Barangay Robles in La Castellana, were just making their usual, everyday journey to their campus in neighboring Moises Padilla when the sudden disaster struck out of nowhere.

Police Major Hancel Lumandaz, the chief of the Isabela Municipal Police Station, explained that the massive military vehicle, which is officially assigned to the Army’s 62nd Infantry Battalion, had been traveling right behind the students.

As the motorcycle reportedly came to a stop along the route, the 40-year-old Army sergeant behind the wheel of the truck allegedly hit the brakes in time to avoid the crash but he said the brakes failed.

Sharing the driver's initial defense, Lumandaz noted to the media, "Nawalan daw ng preno nang subukan niyang huminto matapos tumigil ang motorsiklo."

The resulting impact was incredibly severe. The 22-year-old student suffered fatal injuries from the heavy collision and was later declared dead by medical professionals at a nearby hospital facility.

Meanwhile, his 21-year-old classmate survived the terrifying ordeal and is currently recovering from his sustained injuries while under close medical observation.

Investigating authorities also pointed out a crucial road safety detail regarding the incident: neither of the young students was wearing a protective helmet at the time of the crash.

This critical safety measure is a strict legal requirement under Section 3 of Republic Act No. 10054, widely known as the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

According to Lumandaz, representatives from both parties have held an initial dialogue. The victims' families are currently evaluating whether to press formal legal charges against the truck driver as police continue to complete their investigation into the crash.

In another vehicular accident, a motorcyclist died following a multi-vehicle highway accident in Rizal province. Surveillance footage showed the rider losing balance after making contact with a bicycle while attempting to pass alongside a large truck. Local authorities apprehended the truck driver shortly after the crash as investigations got underway. Police stated that the driver claimed he was initially unaware his vehicle had run over the victim.

Still in another motorcycle accident, a female accountant died after a passenger jeepney struck the rear of a motorcycle in Cainta, Rizal. The victim was traveling alongside her brother toward Pasay City when the collision occurred along the highway. Police confirmed that the 73-year-old jeepney driver lacked valid vehicle registration papers and had prior traffic infractions. The victim's family intends to file formal criminal charges against the driver despite his public plea for forgiveness.
