"This moment, I remembered why intentional 1on1 dates are so valuable - they provide quality, undisturbed time to get to know our children more - how they are, where they are in their season, what they currently like and don't like, what their fears are etc..."

Bettinna revealed the direct and vulnerable questions she and her husband regularly ask their children.

"Gummy doesn't really like it when I ask her hard questions like 'How have I hurt you?' 'Is there anything I have not asked forgiveness for from you?' or 'How can I improve as a Mom?' My husband and I regularly ask these to keep accounts short. Para walang matanim na sama ng loob kasi nakakapag-sorry kami kaagad or nalalaman namin ano nasa puso nila talaga..." she explained.

During their meal, Bettinna decided to rephrase her approach to encourage open dialogue with Gummy.

"But that day I thought of rephrasing them: 'On top of your head, what is it that you like the most about me and what do you hate about me?' (She said hate was such a strong word but I used it anyway to know if there is anything about me, what I say or do that she really despises- whether ever since or recent past.) I'm thankful because she really gave me straight answers! Hehehe Answers that allow me to adjust as a mom to her at her age. Answers that enable me to support her more, guide her better."

Reflecting on the two-hour lunch, Bettinna expressed how meaningful it was to know that her daughter still trusts and confides in her.

"I'd say we had a good date. We ate and talked for 2 hours. Precious time for me. 🥰 I’m so thankful that at 15, I still have my daughter's heart, even with all my mistakes and shortcomings as a first-time mom to her, she still opens up," she concluded.
