Awra Briguela opened up about an online misunderstanding that made her realize how repeated criticism can affect the way she responds to people.

During her appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Friday, August 7, the actress-comedienne recalled an incident involving a comment on her vlog about her trip to Vietnam. A netizen offered to serve as her interpreter if she returned to the country, but Awra initially took the remark as an insult.
The misunderstanding happened after Awra had already received several negative comments on the same video. According to her, viewers had been criticizing her English, grammar, and even a joke that deliberately involved incorrect English for comedic effect.
“Kasi Tito Boy, sa buong vlog ko, ang kino-comment ng tao sa wrong grammar ko, sa English ko, kesyo huwag na daw ako mag-English, or even 'yung joke ko po na English na minamali ko po talaga, pinupuna po nila kahit binibigyan ko ng context,” sabi ni Awra.

Because of the criticism surrounding the video, she believed the netizen’s offer was another attempt to mock her.
“So parang feeling ko po, 'yung comment niya is attack sa 'kin na kailangan ko ng interpreter 'pag mag-iibang bansa kaya i-message ko siya,” pagpapatuloy ng aktres.
Awra later discovered that the commenter had genuinely intended to help her. After seeing a post from the netizen’s child on Threads and understanding the situation, she immediately removed her response and apologized.
“Parang nu'ng nakita ko po 'yung post, kinlarify ko po agad, nag-apologize po agad ako, and nag-take po ako kaagad ng accountability about sa pagkakamali ko kasi genuinely, Tito Boy, mali ko po talaga 'yun at alam ko naman po tanggapin or i-own up 'yung pagkakamali lalo na po 'pag nagkamali po talaga ako,” sabi ni Awra.
The incident also prompted Awra to reflect on how online criticism has shaped her reactions. She revealed that she had made a personal commitment at the beginning of the year to stand up for herself after experiencing continued bashing online.
“So parang this year, 'yun 'yung promise ko sa sarili ko, mag-stand up for myself until lately po, medyo nako-consume na po ako ng bashers, lalo na po sa recent incident po na nangyari na hindi ko akalain na genuinely sincere o nagke-care naman po pala 'yung comment, pero ang pagkakaintindi ko is attack pa rin or bash pa rin,” sabi ni Awra.
She further explained that constantly defending herself had eventually affected her ability to distinguish between genuine concern and criticism.
“'Yung trauma response ko po or 'yung nagiging initial reaction ko lagi is sumagot po ng mas masakit na salita or lumaban. Ang tendency po, hindi na po ako nakakapag-isip minsan nang maayos or bumababa po 'yung pag-unawa ko kasi mas nangingibabaw po 'yung pagtayo ko para sa sarili ko,” sabi ni Awra.
For Awra, the experience became a reminder that not every comment should immediately be treated as an attack, while also emphasizing the importance of owning up to mistakes when they happen.
