Awra Briguela opened up about the criticism she has received over how people address her, saying she does not take issue with being called “sir” but is hurt when her achievements are overshadowed by debates about her pronouns.

During her interview on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on Friday, August 7, Awra discussed the kind of criticism that affects her the most. Host Boy Abunda asked her which among the criticisms directed at her tends to upset her the most.

“Sa lahat ng mga pambabatikos sa iyo, saan ka talaga pinakapikon?” the Asia's King of Talk asked.

Awra explained that she is particularly hurt when people try to turn her achievements into something negative, especially when the criticism follows moments that should be celebratory.

“Hindi naman po pikon, pero Tito Boy, pinakanasasaktan po talaga ako is pag may mga achievement po ako tapos 'yung achievement po na 'yon, ita-try pa rin nila i-convert sa hate. Lalo na po nung graduation ko po last year, gumraduate po ako ng Senior High School, and hindi ko naman po kasalanan kung paano po ako ia-address ng mga news or nung mga articles kung anong preferred na pronouns ko. Even sa winning moment ko po nakikitaan pa rin po nila ng mali dahil hindi lang po sila masaya sa pronouns kong 'she,' 'her'...”

She then stressed that she does not personally mind whatever term people choose to use when addressing her. For Awra, the more important issue is showing basic respect toward other people and allowing them to be happy with who they are.

“Pero Tito Boy, wala po talaga akong pakialam kahit tawagin nila akong 'sir,' kahit anong itawag nila sa'kin wala po 'kong paki kasi hindi ko naman po pinipilit 'yung pagkatao ko sa kanila, pero 'yung maging masaya ka manlang sa kapwa mo or 'yung simpleng respeto kung ano ba 'yung gusto nung isang tao.”

She acknowledged that overcoming the experience has been challenging, but said her family has remained a constant source of strength. Awra also reminded the public that she was only 19 when the incident happened and has been making efforts to grow and become a better person.

Awra also shared an update on her mother, who was recently diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She said their family now has a clearer understanding of her mother’s condition and the treatment she is undergoing.
