In an interview with Bilyonaryo, the couple shared that politics was never the defining factor in their connection. Instead, they focused on the bond and friendship they had built over many years.
Cristine publicly supported the presidential campaign of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during the 2022 elections, while Gio openly backed Leni Robredo.
“We had differences in politics, but we talked. Sa dulo kasi yung mga ganyan bagay. I mean, titingnan mo pa rin naman yung relasyon niyo, yung pagkakaibigan niyo. And yun yung panahon na nag kacancelan yung mga tao sa isa’t-isa,” he explained.

Gio also recalled reconnecting with Cristine during one of the most controversial periods of her career. He said they started talking again when the actress became the subject of online criticism following her portrayal of Imee Marcos in the 2022 film Maid in Malacañang.
“Sobrang solid nung cancel culture nung 2022 and Maid in Malacañang came out. Tapos we started talking again na parang hoy kumusta, okay ka lang kasi they were being bashed online… We started talking again. Okay naman, very successful yung movie di ba,” he added.
For Cristine, political affiliations never changed how she viewed Gio.
“Hindi yun nagmamatter because we’ve known each other since bata pa kami and I knew Gio before na talagang makabayan na tao. So hindi ko siya pinaghihinalaan na sus ano lang to parang pretentious or nagpapanggap na gusto lang makiride,” she expressed.
Gio also addressed assumptions often made online that people with different political preferences automatically have conflicting values.
“Parang people are saying dahil magkaiba kayo ng nung panahon na yun sa politika, magkaiba kayo ng values. Ako, parang we didn’t see it that way. In fact, parang nung pag kami magkasama we’re like teka, same values talaga tayo,” he said.
Today, the couple’s story serves as an example of how personal connections, communication, and shared values can sometimes outweigh political differences.
Cristine Reyes is a Filipino actress, model, and dancer who first rose to prominence as a finalist on the reality talent show StarStruck in 2003. Known as one of her generation's prominent drama stars, she has headlined major box-office hits like No Other Woman and critically acclaimed thrillers such as Untrue.
In another report, Cristine Reyes revealed that she was the one who first raised the idea of marriage to her now-fiancé, Gio Tingson, years before their engagement. According to the actress, Gio declined at the time because he did not feel ready and was uncertain about his situation in life. Gio later explained that he was only in his first year of law school and believed Cristine had already achieved far more professionally and financially than he had.
Meanwhile, Cristine Reyes recounted the heartwarming story of her first encounter with fiancé Gio Tingson during their childhood at a school fair. She shared that Gio once played the role of a “priest” at a mock marriage booth long before their paths crossed again as adults. Their relationship gradually blossomed after reconnecting years later following the 2025 elections.
