“Siya ‘yung unang guy na nanligaw sa’kin. How can you forget that?”
The actress then shared that years ago, she directly asked Gio about taking their relationship to the next level. However, instead of receiving the answer she expected, she was met with hesitation.
“Guess what? Dinecline niya ako. ‘Di pa ‘ko ready,’” she recalled.
Cristine revealed that her efforts did not stop there. She even made another attempt to talk to him about their future together.
“Hindi pa natapos doon, may another instance na pinuntahan ko siya sa bahay niya,” she said.
For his part, Gio explained that his decision at the time had nothing to do with a lack of feelings for Cristine. Instead, he admitted that fear and self-doubt got the better of him.
“I got so scared. I was like, ‘sino ako?’ I’m a first year law student, ‘di ba?” Gio explained.
At the time, he felt completely unprepared for marriage and believed he had not yet established himself professionally or financially.
“’Di ko kaya ‘tong buhay na ‘to! Kakasal na ‘ko? First year law student? Wala akong alam! Wala akong income, wala akong kahit ano,” he said.
Gio also revealed that one of the reasons he hesitated was because he saw Cristine as someone who had already achieved so much at a young age.
“And she was like so established. She had money. She’s self-made. May sarili na rin siyang bahay.”
The public affairs executive admitted that he felt intimidated by Cristine’s success and independence, especially when he compared it to where he was in life at the time.
“Jackpot na jackpot na ‘ko no’n! Hahaha! ‘Di ba? I shy-ed away,” he added jokingly.
The story drew laughter from the hosts and viewers, but it also highlighted how timing played a major role in the couple’s relationship. While marriage was not in the cards for them years ago, both eventually found themselves reconnecting later in life under very different circumstances.
Their relationship has attracted significant public attention in recent weeks after Cristine confirmed their engagement. The actress previously shared photos from a trip to Hong Kong, where fans noticed her engagement ring. She later confirmed the happy news and opened up about the emotional proposal that led to her saying yes.
Meanwhile, reports from GMA News stated that Gio currently serves as the head of Grab’s Public Affairs and Government Relations division. Prior to joining the company, he held several key positions in government and politics. He served as chairperson of the National Youth Commission from 2014 to 2016, worked as Chief Political Officer for former senator Bam Aquino from 2016 to 2018, and later became involved with the Akbayan Citizens’ Action Party from 2018 to 2022.
