In the May 16 episode of YSpeak 2.0, Joy joined a discussion on public expression and speaking up on social issues, where she was asked about the controversial label often used online to describe people seen as insincere in their advocacy or behavior.

The term “performative” has become widely used across social media, often directed at users and personalities who post about causes or beliefs that others feel are not consistently reflected offline.

“I used to have that mindset when it comes to people, but I also learned na mali siya in a way,” she said.

She explained that labeling people can limit their growth.

“If we're going to label people, we're restricting them from being their true selves and from reaching their full capabilities as a person,” she said.

Joy also noted that expression itself is part of human behavior.

“Remember, we're all performative in a way. We perform for people. We perform for the people that we love. We perform for ourselves,” she said.

She added that awareness and expression online can lead to positive change.

“Sana hindi natin nililimit ang tao as performative, because remember that change starts from awareness,” she said.

Joy also warned that excessive labeling can divide people.

“Kung hahanap tayo ng mas maraming kaaway, we're not able to reach a unified change in the future,” she said.
