The candidates for Binibining Pilipinas 2019 were tested earlier this week as they participated in the ‘Free Speak Competition’ which was aired by ABS-CBN.

The ‘Free Speak Competition’ aims to test the communication skills of the candidates as they answer topics like poverty, gender equality, press freedom, water shortage, and animal cruelty within 30 seconds only.

However, KAMI learned that Joanna Tolledo, Caloocan’s candidate for Binibining Pilipinas, has been heavily criticized by netizens after her speech about depression went viral on social media.

During the competition, Joanna got the topic about depression and shared in her speech that you will not experience depression if you truly know yourself, "I'm a psychology major and I studied depression when I was in college and I am a grade school guidance counselor as well, and I have students who are experiencing depression. I am always telling them that if you believe in yourself and if you know yourself, who you are and who you want to be, then you will not experience depression."

Her answer elicited reactions from netizens online. Here are some of their comments from entertainment site Fashion Pulis.

“I wonder how does she handle her students or what advice does she have them.”
“She might be pressured and nervous before and during that. But of course that's not an excuse to give that answer. As usual the keyboard warriors/woke culture are having fun to mock her instead of correcting her properly and give her advice and more knowledge about depression.”
“Wag na natin sayangin energy sa kanya. Sa tingin ko di siya insensitive. Mababaw siya.”
“Psychology grad ka pa naman. Then dapat alam mo na may biochemical basis din ang depression. It is not just about knowing yourself. Di ka ata nagbuklat ng libro”
“That’s very ignorant. They need to take her diploma back.”
“I learned depression through Noni and Sharmaine Buencamino, it’s not that you are malungkot it’s because nagkakaroon ng imbalance sa brain something like that. When will people learn ba na hindi dahil nawawala ka sa landas ang depression.”
“Yikes, I’m scared for her students. That’s a disaster.”
“Depression is something no one will understand fully unless they had it themselves. That sickness is a whole different monster.”
