- Famous singer-composer Ogie Alcasid created a song out of the now-popular term “lugaw is essential”
- The term trended on social media for several days and have been subject to many memes
- It came about after Malacañang announced that “lugaw is essential” after a barangay official prevented a delivery rider from entering the barangay
- The barangay official said that they would not allow the rider to deliver the “lugaw” as it is not essential
Ogie Alcasid has created a song out of the term “lugaw is essential” and posted it on social media.
The post gained thousands of views in just one day and it even earned the praise of several showbiz personalities like Megastar Sharon Cuneta.
“Excuse me lang po pero yes, LUGAW IS ESSENTIAL!!! Hahahaha BFF grabe ka!!! Eydiwaw!” Sharon said.
The term was brought forth by Malacañang officials, specifically Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, in response to a query whether the action of a barangay official in preventing a delivery rider from bringing “lugaw” to his customer is appropriate or not.
Earlier, a video of a rider being prevented by a barangay official from entering the locale due to curfew restrictions became viral.
The rider reasoned out that he’s supposed to deliver “lugaw” to a customer, which the barangay official said is not “essential.”
Malacañang said that “lugaw is essential” as it is also food. The barangay official has since apologized.
This did not prevent netizens, however, from making memes about “lugaw is essential.”
The latest is the song created by Ogie, with the song’s lyrics appearing to directly contradict the claim of the barangay official.
“Lugaw is essential pagkat ito ay pagkain, lugaw is essential kaya ito ay dadalhin, lugaw is essential pagkain ito ng bawat pinoy, oh lugaw is life, oh lugaw is life, lugaw is essential,” the lyrics of Ogie’s song goes.
It is not clear if the singer-composer plans to complete the song or record and release it.

“Lugaw” is a Filipino rice gruel or porridge. It is made by boiling white rice with excess water, though traditionally, glutinous rice is used. Its most basic version consist only of the boiled rice with a sprinkle of salt, garlic, and ginger. In other cases, chicken, fish, pork or beef are added. The food is oftentimes given to sick or bedridden people as it is easy to eat and digest.
Several days ago, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that “lugaw” is classified as an essential good. He made the clarification after Malacañang officials learned about the viral video where a barangay official barred from entering their locale a delivery food rider who is supposed to bring the food to his customer. Spox Roque also said that even with an enhanced community quarantine, food delivery should be allowed 24/7 and should not be stopped at checkpoints.
Despite the clarifications made by Malacañang, celebrities still took to social media to react to the viral video about lugaw. The viral video shows a male Grab rider being apprehended for delivering the said food. He can be heard discussing with a woman who insisted that lugaw is a non-essential good. Prominent personalities like comedienne Pokwang then slammed the woman’s remark.
