Lee Ji-eun was born on May 16th, 1993 in Gwangjin District, Seoul in South Korea. She got an interest in pursuing a career in entertainment when she was very young and began attending classes. Before she officially joined LEON Entertainment in 2007, the singer trained at Good Entertainment along with Yubin, Jun Hyoseong, Uee, and Heo Ga-yoon. She then moved to Bangbae, Seoul after joining LEON Entertainment. To her surprise, she received ten months training before her debut single in 2008.
On September 18th, 2008, IU performed her first single on the music show tagged M! Countdown. This was her first performance as a professional singer.
