Lionel Messi’s father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, has died at 68, according to an Aug. 8 announcement from Newell's Old Boys, the club where Lionel began his football journey.

Argentine outlets reported that Jorge passed away Friday at a Rosario hospital in his hometown.

The club described Jorge as a devoted fan, businessman and father who played a significant role in Lionel's journey from his childhood in Rosario to becoming one of football's most celebrated players.

“The Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys bids farewell with deep sorrow and sorrow to Jorge Messi, who died at the age of 68 in the city of Rosario.”

Newell's described Jorge as a devoted supporter of the club, businessman and father. The club also credited him and his wife, Celia Cuccittini, with providing guidance, discipline and unwavering support throughout Lionel’s development and football career.

“His constant companionship and leadership behind the scenes were instrumental in backing Lionel's every step, from his beginnings in the Falklanders to world football's ultimate glory.

Thank you for teaching him to love these colors.”

Newell's then extended its condolences to Jorge's family, including Lionel, Celia, Rodrigo, Matias and Maria Sol, during the difficult time.
