“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia,” said the statement, using the Māori word for extended family or community.

The family also shared that Neill was surrounded by his loved ones during his final moments and remembered him for the grace and dignity he carried throughout his life.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life."

They went on to reveal that while his death came unexpectedly, they were grateful that he had remained free from cancer.

“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free."

The family also expressed their appreciation to the medical team who cared for the acclaimed actor during his final days.

“They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care."
