- Honeylet and Kitty were spotted later leaving the ICC, unable to see and visit the former president

Honeylet Avanceña, long-time partner of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, and their daughter Veronica “Kitty” Duterte arrived in The Netherlands on Wednesday and proceeded directly to the International Criminal Court (ICC) detention center in The Hague.

A video shared by ABS-CBN News captured Avanceña and Kitty entering the ICC’s reception area, where they inquired about the possibility of visiting the former president, who is currently detained and facing trial for crimes against humanity. Their visit comes just days before Duterte’s 80th birthday on March 28.

Rodrigo Duterte, who served as president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, has been known for his close ties to his children, who have also made names for themselves in public service and politics. Duterte has three children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Zimmerman: Paolo, Sara, and Sebastian.

Paolo Duterte is a congressman representing Davao City, while Sara Duterte served as Davao City mayor before becoming the country’s vice president. The youngest, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, succeeded his sister as mayor of Davao City.

Honeylet Avanceña, Duterte’s common-law wife, is a businesswoman and former nurse. Their daughter, Kitty Duterte, has mostly stayed away from politics but has occasionally appeared with her parents during official functions. Kitty, now 20, was a constant figure during Duterte’s presidency, often seen at his side during public appearances.

Former President Duterte was detained by the ICC weeks sgo after the court issued a warrant of arrest stemming from its investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killings during his terms as both President of the Philippines and Mayor of Davao City.

Despite his repeated denials and claims of political persecution, Duterte’s case has moved forward in the ICC, which asserts jurisdiction over crimes committed while the Philippines was still a member of the Rome Statute until its withdrawal in 2019.

In another clip by ABS-CBN News, Honeylet and Kitty were spotted leaving the ICC, unable to see and visit the former president.

Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He left Malacañang on June 30, 2022. The newly inaugurated President of the Philippines is Bongbong Marcos who got 31 million votes in the May 2022 elections. The new Vice President of the Philippines is VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president.

Earlier, the former president was apprised of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine. In a video shared by GMA News, CIDG chief, Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, is seen reciting the Miranda Doctrine to the former president. The reading of the Miranda rights is a standard procedure for persons being arrested to ensure that the latter fully understands their rights upon their arrest. It can be recalled that the International Police (InterPol) has confirmed the issuance of the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the former president.
