Three people injured after man allegedly attacks them inside home with hammer in Manila

Three people, including two foreign nationals, were injured after a 20-year-old man allegedly attacked them with a hammer inside a residence in Sampaloc, Manila, on Wednesday night.

The suspect was eventually stopped by residents who rushed to help after hearing commotion inside the house along Visayan Avenue in Barangay 567. He was reportedly dragged outside by a woman before residents confronted and assaulted him.

According to police, the incident stemmed from a financial dispute involving the suspect and the sibling of one of the victims.

Police Lieutenant Oliver Balingit, commander of Gulod Police Community Precinct under Manila Police District Station 4, said the suspect allegedly owed the victim's brother PHP 100,000.

“Itong suspek po natin is nagkaroon po ng utang sa kapatid ng biktima natin. Ang pagkakaalala po namin is P100,000. Itong suspek po, nagalit po dahil hindi niya po maibigay 'yung utang sa biktima,” Balingit explained.

Investigators said the 26-year-old American victim had invited the suspect to the residence before the incident happened. During their encounter, the suspect allegedly became angry and picked up a hammer, which he used to strike the foreign national in the head.

The suspect then attempted to leave the room but encountered a 62-year-old house helper standing near the doorway. He allegedly attacked the senior citizen with the same weapon.

The victim's 23-year-old sister also tried to intervene but was reportedly struck by the suspect.

Balingit recounted how the commotion alerted people nearby.

“Noong nagkaroon po ng komosyon po sa loob ng bahay, itong suspek po, pababa na po siya. Pero nagsigaw-sigaw po 'yung biktima, ‘Magnanakaw, magnanakaw,’” he said.

Residents immediately responded and prevented the suspect from escaping. He was later turned over to authorities and is now being held at the Manila Police District custodial facility.

Barangay officials confirmed that the female sibling and the senior citizen had already been discharged from the hospital. The male victim, however, remained under medical care.

The suspect declined to provide a statement when approached by authorities. He is facing three counts of frustrated murder.

Meanwhile, a man was fatally shot outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon. According to GMA News' Unang Balita, the victim was shot in the head at around 4 p.m., while the gunman fled immediately after the attack. A video that circulated online showed the victim lying on the ground as his live-in partner stayed by his side while carrying their infant child. Police launched a manhunt for the suspect following the shooting.

In a separate incident, an unidentified man died after he was allegedly caught attempting to steal a fighting rooster in Consolacion, Cebu. A report on Balitanghali said the 52-year-old rooster owner was sleeping when he noticed someone taking his animal. He confronted the alleged thief and reportedly struck him in the head with a hardened piece of cement during their encounter.
