Initial updates from a GMA News stringer indicated that one of the affected students was still being monitored at a hospital, while another had already been discharged after receiving medical treatment.
The Cauayan City Police Station was contacted for additional confirmation and initial details regarding the incident, although no response had been received at the time of the report.
DepEd said authorities are now working to determine what led to the incident and whether proper safety measures were in place during the activity.
"DepEd is taking the necessary steps to establish the facts surrounding the incident and is coordinating with the local government and law enforcement authorities. A fact-finding investigation is underway, including a review of the activity, safety measures, equipment used, and the roles of those involved," the agency said.
The Schools Division Office also confirmed that the incident happened inside the school premises and said it was coordinating with the local government and concerned agencies to assist those affected.
The school likewise expressed grief over the deaths and assured the community that learner safety remains a priority.
“The entire family of Cauayan South Central School, together with the School Parent-Teacher Association Officers, expresses its profound sadness over the tragic loss following an unforeseen incident within the school premises. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, friends, and the entire school community during this difficult time,” the school said.
DepEd also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the incident.
"Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings," the agency said.
In another report, a man was shot dead outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon, prompting authorities to launch a manhunt for the gunman who reportedly fled shortly after the attack. A video that circulated online showed the victim lying on the ground after the attack, while his live-in partner remained beside him as she carried their infant child. The distressing scene drew the attention of students and residents in the area, prompting barangay officials and tanods to respond and help secure the location. Authorities are continuing their efforts to identify and locate the person responsible for the shooting as the victim’s family deals with the loss.
Meanwhile, a mother and her 13-year-old son were injured after they were allegedly attacked with a bolo while sleeping inside their home in Barangay Paril, Cebu City.
