Woman injured after security guard's firearm accidentally fires inside Iloilo hospital

A woman accompanying a patient was injured after a security guard’s service firearm accidentally discharged inside a hospital in Guimbal, Iloilo.

The incident happened Friday morning at the Representative Pedro G. Trono Memorial Hospital, according to a report by GMA Regional TV Ratsada Balita.

Police said the guard was carrying out a routine protocol when the firearm went off. The guard had reportedly inspected his service weapon and believed that it no longer contained ammunition.

The guard then pulled the trigger, resulting in an accidental discharge.

Instead of directly hitting anyone, the bullet struck the hospital floor. The impact caused pieces of the tiles to break apart and scatter, with one of the fragments hitting a female watcher of a patient in the forehead.

The woman sustained an injury from the flying debris and was immediately given medical attention following the incident.

The security guard also suffered a minor abrasion in the accident.

Authorities are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the firearm discharge as they determine what happened during the guard’s inspection of his weapon.

The incident highlights the potential risks involved in handling firearms, particularly in areas where patients, watchers, and other members of the public are present.

Police said they are awaiting the decision of the injured woman on whether she will pursue a formal complaint against the security guard.

No details were immediately provided regarding the extent of the woman’s injury or whether further medical treatment was required after she received initial care.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities assess the incident and the circumstances that led to the firearm being discharged inside the hospital.

Police will also determine whether any further action should be taken based on the findings and the decision of the injured party.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon, prompting police to launch a manhunt for the suspected gunman. According to GMA News’ Unang Balita, the victim was shot in the head at around 4 p.m. and the assailant reportedly fled immediately after the attack. A video that circulated online showed the victim lying on the ground as his live-in partner stayed by his side while carrying their infant child. Barangay officials and tanods later moved to secure the area after students and residents gathered around the scene.
