The infant's body was discovered on Thursday morning during a clean-up drive carried out by Estero Rangers and officials of Barangay 228, according to a report by GMA News' "Unang Balita" on Friday.

Barangay personnel immediately retrieved the baby from the water, but the infant had already died before being found.

Authorities said they have yet to identify the person responsible for abandoning the newborn because there are no CCTV cameras covering the section of the estero where the body was recovered.

Barangay officials believe there is a strong possibility that the infant came from one of the neighboring communities and was carried by the current before ending up in their area.

The Abad Santos Police Station confirmed that its h*micide section has taken over the investigation. Investigators are now coordinating with nearby barangays in an effort to determine who abandoned the baby and identify the child's parents.

Police are also appealing to residents who may have seen suspicious activity or who have relevant information to come forward and assist authorities in the investigation.

The case remains under investigation as law enforcement continues to gather evidence and trace the circumstances surrounding the newborn's death. Authorities hope that public cooperation will help them identify those responsible and bring clarity to the tragic incident.
