During a recent episode of “Your Honor,” featuring Mikee Quintos. Buboy opened up about growing up without much money and attending public school with his siblings. He recalled that his older brother was among those in the family who managed to finish school.
Villar said his childhood involved collecting recyclable materials at night and returning to school the following day. He would wake up around 3 a.m. to wait for the garbage truck, where he helped look for materials that could still be sold.

Despite being young, Villar also looked for other ways to earn something. He eventually joined amateur singing contests in Cebu, even though his mother initially did not know about it.
One of those competitions turned out to be intended for adults. Villar was the only child among the contestants, but the organizers allowed him to perform as an opener.
“Sumali ako ng singing contest, puro matatanda 'yung kalaban. Walang bata. So pinagtatawanan ako nu'ng organizer na, ‘Bata ‘to eh, ano ‘to, pangmalaki ‘to. Pero kung gusto mo kumanta, sige mag-opener. Pinag-opener lang nila ako, binigyan nila ako ng bigas, de lata,” he said.
Although he did not win a monetary prize, Villar was happy to bring home rice and canned goods for his mother.
“Pagtingin ko, may bigas ako. Ang nasa utak ko noon, ibibigay ko ito kay mama, kumbaga, ‘Ang galing kong anak ngayon! May bitbit ako. May uulamin ako ngayon!’ Si mama kasi, kita ko lagi ang mukha ni mama,” he recalled.
Villar became emotional as he explained that, as a child, he did not fully understand how difficult life was for his parents. What mattered to him was seeing his mother smile after he brought something home.
Looking back as an adult and now understanding the situation from a parent's perspective, Villar said he realized why his actions meant so much to his family.
“Kung ako siguro 'yung magulang, nakita ko merong bitbit 'yung anak ko, siguro ako maiiyak ako. Sa murang edad, kung titignan ko 'yung sarili ko, sa murang edad ko na 'yun, nakikita ko na siya at gusto kong tumulong sa pamilya ko. Hindi siya big deal sa akin. As a parent, malamang big deal siguro sa kanila,” he shared.
His experiences also shaped his attitude toward school. Villar admitted that bullying and difficult teachers contributed to his desire to leave school and focus on earning money instead.
His mother eventually allowed him to continue doing singing-related activities, but only if he also continued his education. The arrangement became a bonding experience for the two, with Villar joining his mother at singing events while still attending school.
Their situation changed after they moved to Manila. Villar was only five years old at the time and soon discovered that adjusting to his new environment came with another set of challenges, including fears of being bullied.
His mother continued encouraging his participation in singing contests while making sure he kept up with his studies. At one point, Villar even resorted to home study as he balanced his education with the opportunities that came his way.
