Mariel did not provide additional details about what she meant by the “chemistry” she observed between the senator and the Davao City mayor. However, her remarks quickly prompted speculation among some netizens about a possible political partnership involving the two.
Several commenters interpreted the post as a possible reference to the 2028 elections, particularly the possibility of Baste running for president with Robin as his vice-presidential running mate.
One commenter wrote, “The President & the Vice President in 2028 if GOD forbid VP Sara will be impeached."
Another netizen similarly suggested, “Pwedi Silang dalawa mag tandem sa 2028."
Other reactions were more critical, with one commenter describing them as a:
“Tandem ng dalawang sira ulo," while another wrote, “Gandang tandem nito sa 2028, second option nation."
There were also users who expressed support for the possibility of the two joining forces in the future. One comment stated:
“Ok na may pang laban na kmi kung sakaling impeach niyo man si vp sara."
Meanwhile, Mariel’s post comes as Robin remains involved in the impeachment proceedings concerning Vice President Sara Duterte, Baste’s sister. Padilla was among the senator-judges who participated in the impeachment trial.
During the September 29 hearing, Baste appeared as a hostile witness in connection with the proceedings involving his sister.
While Mariel did not explicitly identify the “chemistry” she referred to as a political partnership, her choice of words was enough to fuel discussions among netizens about what the interaction between Robin and Baste could mean for the political landscape leading to 2028.
