Sitting down with host Bianca Gonzalez on an episode of the Paano Ba 'To?! podcast, the It’s Showtime mainstay became teary-eyed as she looked back on how she survived early hardships.

In the now-viral video clip, Karylle recalled a personal mantra that helped anchor her as a young girl:

"Having gone through so much in my childhood, I had this one thing that I would always say to myself... nakakaiyak. Parang, 'You're the strongest person I know.' Not that I knew a lot of people back then. But I think I understood."

Reflecting on the heavy expectations carried by many women, Karylle observed how easy it is to become trapped in brutal self-criticism, especially for firstborn daughters, one that resonated with many netizens:

"We are the hardest on ourselves, and that’s horrible. But that to me, I think very woman, or very eldest child. So I think you will be so hard on yourself, so be your biggest cheerleader."

Karylle laughed softly through her tears as she recalled realizing the power of self-affirmation early on, remarking, "And I knew that as a kid. So I was just like thinking about it, sabi ko, 'Ang talino ko pala.' Again cheering myself on, because a lot of people will tell you, you know nothing, right?"

For Karylle, self-support becomes indispensable during moments when external validation disappears and isolation sets in:

"Be your biggest cheerleader because in moments when you will feel sad and alone, ikaw lang. And if you put yourself down, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, but you gotta throw that out the window. That is the worst attitude you could ever have."
