Actor Lance Carr became emotional as he reflected on the loss of promising student-athlete Rene Baterbonia while also recalling the most frightening experience he has ever faced—nearly drowning.

During the media conference for the upcoming film Rosario, Lance and his fellow cast members were asked about the scariest moments in their lives. Without hesitation, he shared that almost drowning remains the experience he can never forget.
“Muntik na akong malunod dati. I almost drowned, it was really scary,” said Lance.
He was then asked whether the incident happened during basketball training.

“Hindi naman po, hindi naman basketball training.”
Before pursuing a career in show business, Lance was a student-athlete at Ateneo de Davao University, where he got to know promising basketball player Rene Baterbonia, who later died during a training session in Dipaculao, Aurora.
In a separate interview with GMANetwork.com, Lance looked back on the young athlete's remarkable journey and admitted that Rene's passing continues to weigh heavily on him.
“Sobrang nasasayangan lang ako sa potential ng bata. He was really the pride of Davao region. Kahit hindi naman talaga siya taga-Davao Region, taga-CARAGA region siya, pero he wore the DAVRAA (Davao Regional Athletic Association) jersey with pride and he wore the Ateneo de Davao jersey with pride. Sobrang nanghihinayang lang po ako sa bata.”
Lance shared that the last time he played alongside Rene was during a celebrity basketball game at the 2025 Kadayawan Festival in Davao City. Rene, only 19 years old, had already established himself as one of the country's brightest young athletes after earning MVP honors at the Palarong Pambansa while representing Davao Region.
Asked about the current atmosphere among Ateneo de Davao student-athletes, Lance said he continues to stay updated through his former coaches.
“Knowing them, parang ang masasabi ko lang ay kailangan nilang tumuloy, e. It's not a reason for them to stop training, and it's not a reason for them to stop achieving their dreams.”
He also remembered Rene's words of encouragement to his teammates.
“Yun din ang sinabi ni Rene sa DAVRAA, na parang: 'Heads up, heads up! Ang layo pa ng mararating natin.' I think, yun ang gusto ni Rene para sa team niya sa Ateneo de Davao.”
Although Lance acknowledged that the community is still grieving, he believes Rene's legacy continues to inspire everyone around him.
“Of course, the mood is different. Parang sobrang legend na kasi niya sa Ateneo community. Knowing my coaches din, kailangan lang talaga nilang tumuloy sa laban nila.”
Following the tragic deaths of Rene Baterbonia and fellow student-athlete Divine Adili, Lance also offered advice to aspiring athletes about prioritizing their health.
“Know your body and know your limit sa katawan mo. Di ko naman sinasabi na katulad ng nangyari sa Ateneo training sa Baler, pero… Just be honest to yourself and listen to your body, know when to recover, and learn when to come back kung galing kang injury.”
He encouraged young athletes to continue believing in themselves despite life's challenges.
“Never stop dreaming and never stop chasing your goals,” said Lance.
“Nothing is really impossible. Kagaya ni Rene, he was just a small kid with a big dream. Isa rin ako sa mga ganun dati, na nangarap na makapaglaro sa PBA, NCAA… Basketball is just gonna be there. Pero if you really want to succeed in that sport, you really have to work five times as hard as anybody else.”
Although Lance is now focusing on his acting career, he said basketball will always remain an important part of his life.

He has steadily built a diverse acting portfolio, starring in notable television and digital series such as Dirty Linen and Viva One's Hell University, while expanding his reach with upcoming projects like the horror film Rosario.

Meanwhile, BB Gandanghari sparked mixed reactions after hinting that she plans to direct a biopic about the late basketball player Rene "Bobet" Baterbonia. Her Instagram posts paying tribute to Rene and spending time with his family drew both praise and criticism from netizens.
