During their guest appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda earlier this week, the two friends discussed whether political differences could affect the future of a relationship.
Joy explained that she believes communication should always come first. Rather than forcing her own beliefs on a partner, she said she prefers listening carefully to understand the other person's perspective before explaining her own.
“I’m very big on conversations and I’m not one to impose kasi sa relationship. So ako, I’ll take muna kung ano yung kanyang side. I’ll try to digest and in the same way, gusto ko rin paintindi sa kanya kung bakit ganun yung take ko.”

Despite her openness to differing political opinions, Joy admitted there is one situation where she would no longer compromise.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a reason to break up with somebody unless it’s about morals, unless we’re talking about lives being lost–– doon siguro ako mag draw ng line.”
She further clarified that she still has room to understand opposing political views, but only up to a certain point.
“If it’s just politically being different, ako meron pa akong leeway to understand pero again ang understanding ko, mag stop lang siya pag buhay na ang pinag-uusapan.”
Baus, meanwhile, took a firmer stance on the issue. He admitted that political compatibility is already a deciding factor before entering a relationship.
“Hard no pag magkaiba kami ng politics… I guess bago rin muna maging kami, tatanungin ko muna sino binoto mo nung huling eleksyon?”
Although he delivered the remark humorously, Baus stressed that the topic carries serious weight when thinking about long-term commitment.
According to him, a romantic partner is someone with whom a person plans to build a future, making shared principles an essential consideration.
“Yung kasama mo na 'to, kasama mo sa bahay and of course balak mo kasama mo siya for the rest of your life so politics needs to be a factor in terms of how you are going to view this partner.”
He added that a partner's outlook on justice, opportunity, and support reflects values that ultimately shape a relationship.
“The way they support you and your outlook in life in terms of abundance, in terms of access, in terms of justice in general, I think that is a very big deal or those are major factors I look for in a partner.”
Joy and Baus have consistently spoken out on social media regarding issues they believe affect the country. Their interview offered viewers a deeper look into how those convictions also influence their personal lives, particularly when it comes to choosing someone they hope to spend the future with.
