Rabiya Mateo, in the podcast “Updated with Nelson Canlas,” revealed that they didn’t have a permanent place to live when she was still young.

The former Ms. Universe candidate said they used to stay in rented homes and when they’re unable to pay, landlords would kick them out.

She even recalled one instance where they were evicted from the place they’re staying in Laguna and would need to leave their TV, sala set, and refrigerator as payment for rent owed.

“Nagre-rent lang kami, and kapag hindi nakabayad ng rent, pinapalayas. Ganoon kahirap yung buhay namin,” Rabiya said.
“Hindi naman siya traumatic pero more of naaawa ako sa nanay ko. Kasi siyempre, nakikita mo ’yong mama mo nagmamakaawa para sa inyo,” the beauty queen and actress added.

She said that since they don’t have a place of their own, they would transfer from one place to another.

“Nag-Grade 1 ako dito sa Manila, nag-Grade 2 ako sa Laguna, nag-Grade 3 ako sa Iloilo. Napalipat-lipat talaga kami because wala kaming address, wala kaming bahay,” she said.

Rabiya also revealed they would often seek loans from everyone, like relatives and others.

“Nangungutang kung kani-kanino, sa mga kamag-anak, minsan hindi na rin tinutulungan. Kasi siguro ayaw din nila madamay sa hirap ng buhay namin,” the actress recalled.

She said that she grew up poor and learned to survive by working at an early age.

Rabiya expressed her gratitude she became a full scholar in college, which is a big help for her and her family.

Rabiya Occeña Mateo is a Filipina-Indian model and is the reigning Miss Universe Philippines. The beauty queen represented the Philippines in the 69th Miss Universe pageant held on May 16, 2021, in Florida, USA. She concluded her journey in the prestigious pageant in the top 21.

In the same interview, Rabiya admitted she doesn't feel any anger towards her father who is an Indian national. This was despite the fact that her father left them to live impoverished lives. According to Rabiya, even her mother has no bad words for her father. She also said that she knew in her heart that time would come she and her father would meet again and when that day arrives, Rabiya said she would hug her father tight.

In another interview, this time by 24 Oras, Rabiya said she doesn’t mind being called ambitious. The beauty queen and actress said that she wouldn’t be insulted if someone calls her ambitious. The former Philippines representative to the Ms. Universe 2020 said ambition drives her to do better in life. In the interview, Rabiya also talked about other things like her business and academic goals.
