“A quick date with my panganay last week when classes were cancelled. Our first date outside the house since I gave birth. Iba pa rin talaga kapag sa labas and away from her siblings and Dad…” she wrote.

For Bettina, spending time alone with Gummy gave them an opportunity to focus completely on each other. She explained that intentional one-on-one dates are valuable because they give parents uninterrupted time to understand what their children are experiencing.

“This moment, I remembered why intentional 1on1 dates are so valuable- they provide quality, undisturbed time to get to know our children more- how they are, where they are in their season, what they currently like and don’t like, what their fears are etc…” she said.

Bettina also revealed that she and her husband make an effort to ask their children difficult questions as part of maintaining an open relationship with them.

She said Gummy does not particularly enjoy being asked questions such as, “How have I hurt you?” and “Is there anything I have not asked forgiveness for from you?” Bettina also asks her daughter, “How can I improve as a Mom?”

According to Bettina, she and her husband regularly ask these questions so that resentment does not build up within the family.

“My husband and I regularly ask these to keep accounts short. Para walang matanim na sama ng loob kasi nakakapagsorry kami kaagad or nalalaman namin ano nasa puso nila talaga…” she explained.

During their recent date, however, Bettina decided to approach the conversation differently. Instead of directly asking her daughter the usual questions, she came up with another way to encourage Gummy to share her honest thoughts.

“But that day I thought of rephrasing them: ‘On top of your head, what is it that you like the most about me and what do you hate about me?’”

Bettina acknowledged that the word “hate” was deliberately strong because she wanted to know whether there was anything about her behavior, words or actions that Gummy genuinely disliked, whether the issue was something recent or something that had bothered her for a long time.

“She said hate was such a strong word but I used it anyway to know if there is anything about me, what I say or do that she really despises- whether ever since or recent past,” Bettina explained.

The mother said she was thankful that Gummy responded honestly instead of simply giving her answers she thought Bettina wanted to hear.

“I’m thankful because she really gave me straight answers! Hehehe Answers that allow me to adjust as a mom to her at her age. Answers that enable me to support her more, guide her better,” she shared.

Bettina said the date lasted around two hours, during which they ate together and talked. For her, the seemingly simple outing became an opportunity to better understand her teenage daughter.

“I’d say we had a good date. We ate and talked for 2 hours. Precious time for me. 🥰”

The experience also made Bettina reflect on her relationship with Gummy as the teenager continues growing up. She expressed gratitude that, despite being a first-time mother to her, she still feels that her daughter is willing to let her into her world.

“I’m so thankful that at 15, I still have my daughter’s heart, even with all my mistakes and shortcomings as a first-time mom to her, she still opens up. I know she still lets me in…”
