The Manila City Government has announced that it is in the process of installing thousands of CCTV cameras with facial recognition.
KAMI learned that the CCTV cameras can determine those who have criminal records with the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA).
In a report by the ABS-CBN News, the installation of CCTV cameras with facial recognition is part of the city’s campaign to prevent crimes.
The surveillance cameras can easily detect those who are wanted or people that the authorities have been looking for.
According to a report by Vice, the local government had a test run. Two people with fake criminal records passed by the camera in Tayuman LRT Station. They were identified as "Suspect 1" and "Suspect 2" while those without criminal records were tagged as "unknown."
As reported by GMA News Online (authored by Julia Mari Ornedo), the cameras can also recognize conduction stickers and plate numbers of vehicles even in dim areas.
“Gusto lang namin maiparamdam na karapatan ng mga taga-Lungsod ng Maynila na mamuhay nang payapa at panatag,” Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said.
“Sa mga kriminal na may records… hindi kayo puwede sa Maynila,” he added.
The Manila mayor mentioned that the surveillance cameras will only be installed in public areas to prevent the invasion of privacy.
