‘Romantics Anonymous’ actress Yuri Nakamura dies at 44

Alpha Agency confirmed on September 14 that the Japanese actress died on September 1. Her family and colleagues from the agency had already held a private funeral.

“We express our deepest gratitude for the kindness shown to her during her lifetime and respectfully announce her passing,” the agency said, as reported by GMA Entertainment.

According to the management company, Yuri was first diagnosed with cancer 13 years ago. She and the agency president agreed to keep her condition private because they did not want to worry her colleagues and industry partners.

The actress later went into remission and continued pursuing the work she loved. She also attended her regular medical examinations while remaining active in film and television.

However, the cancer returned in January 2025. Yuri had surgery, but later tests revealed that the disease had already spread.

A complete cure or another remission had become difficult. Still, she continued receiving treatment while working as an actress.

In August 2026, Yuri developed another bowel obstruction while preparing to return to work. Doctors later informed her that she had little time left.

Alpha Agency said she remained calm and spent her final moments surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Born Yuri Sei in Neyagawa, Osaka, the late star came from a family with Japanese and Korean roots. Her father was a third-generation Zainichi Korean, while her mother was born in South Korea.

Yuri began her entertainment career in music after joining the Japanese talent search program “Asayan” in 1996. She later formed the pop duo YuriMari with Mari Izawa.

The pair made their debut in 1998 before disbanding the following year. Yuri eventually shifted her focus to acting and appeared in numerous movies, television dramas, and stage productions.

She gained recognition for her performance in the 2007 film “Pacchigi! Love & Peace.” Her portrayal of Kyonja earned her honors, including a Best Actress award and a Newcomer Award at the Osaka Cinema Festival.
