Japanese-born South Korean actress Yuri Nakamura has died at the age of 44 following a battle with rectal cancer. She was best known to global audiences for portraying Irene in the hit Netflix romantic-comedy series "Romantics Anonymous," which premiered in 2025.

Nakamura’s agency, Alpha Agency, announced her death in a press statement on Monday, September 14. The agency confirmed that the actress died on September 1.
According to the agency, Yuri had previously battled cancer 13 years ago, but she and the agency president decided to keep her diagnosis private at the time. Her cancer eventually went into remission, allowing her to continue working while consistently undergoing her scheduled medical screenings.
Alpha Agency said her cancer was detected again in January 2025. Although surgery was successful, doctors discovered metastasis following the operation. At that point, Yuri chose to focus on treatments that would help her manage the condition, as achieving complete remission had become difficult.

In August 2026, Yuri developed an intestinal obstruction, which led her to withdraw from an upcoming NHK drama that was scheduled to air in January 2027.
