The robot was featured in a report by GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita, which showed shoppers interacting with the machine while visiting the store.

Instead of being assisted by a human employee, customers can place an order and let the robot retrieve the item for them.

Xiaogai can also communicate in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, making it easier for different customers to interact with the machine.

According to reports, Beijing-based robotics company Galbot launched three outlets in Hong Kong on September 1. The stores are located in Hung Hom, Wan Chai, and Kai Tak and operate 24 hours a day.

The G1 robot stands about 173 centimeters tall and was designed to perform retail tasks. Customers can select products on a screen before paying electronically, after which the robot picks up and hands over the ordered items.

The stores offer snacks and drinks, giving shoppers a chance to try a more automated way of buying everyday items. Customers can also interact with the robot even when they are not making a purchase.

Aside from helping with purchases, Xiaogai can chat with shoppers. Visitors were also seen watching the robot dance, adding an entertaining element to the shopping experience.

One customer, Dylan Tyack, told Reuters that interacting with the robot was "quite a fun experience."

He also said it was surprising to see how far the technology has developed and wondered what similar machines could be capable of in the next few years.

However, not everyone believed the system was already fully polished.

This observation was also highlighted in the Unang Balita report. Customers reportedly enjoyed the experience but believed improvements were still needed, especially when it comes to response time and dealing with unexpected situations.

Galbot already operates around 200 retail stores across nearly 50 cities in mainland China. The Hong Kong outlets mark the company's first expansion outside the mainland.

The launch gives customers a chance to experience artificial intelligence in a more physical and everyday setting, rather than only through phones, computers, or online services.
