Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo described his second gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan as a miracle, especially after recalling a dangerous mistake during the vault qualification.

Yulo said his main prayer throughout the competition was for his safety and that of the other athletes. He explained that while the vault routine happens quickly, mistakes can also lead to serious consequences in an instant.

"Bukod sa physically and mentally exhausted na ako that moment, ang pinagpe-pray ko lang maging safe po lahat. 'Yung vault po kasi kahit sobrang bilis niya i-judge, sobrang bilis ng performance, ganun din kabilis po 'yung puwede maging mangyaring hindi maganda," sabi ni Carlos sa interview sa Unang Hirit.

Looking back on the qualification round, Yulo admitted that he made a mistake during his vault, with his back landing first.

"Looking back din po sa qualification, nagkamali po ako sa vault ko na 'yon. Nauna po 'yung likod ko. It was really a miracle kasi nakapasok pa 'ko ng finals."

The incident became an especially frightening moment for the gymnast because of the possible consequences of an incorrect landing. Yulo recalled praying while he was still in the air, hoping that he would be able to land safely.

"I was like, really praying in the air na sana okay lang ako pagbagsak ko. Delikado po, puwede pong mauna 'yung ulo ko and then that's it for me. But yeah, God is really good," dagdag niya.

Despite the frightening experience during qualification, Yulo went on to secure two gold medals in the competition. He first topped the men's floor exercise final before adding another gold medal after finishing first in the men's vault final.

For Yulo, the achievement came after a physically and mentally demanding competition, making the result even more meaningful given what happened during the earlier stage of the event.

Aside from celebrating his own victories, Yulo also expressed pride in the performance of his younger brother, Eldrew, who earned a bronze medal in the men's horizontal bar finals.

The 2026 Asian Games marked the second time the brothers competed together, giving Carlos another memorable experience as an older brother.

"Masaya po. Second time po namin na mag-compete together. And ito pinaka grabe din na moment for him, and siguro for me also as a kuya."

Yulo said Eldrew's podium finish could also help build his confidence as he continues his gymnastics journey.

"Right now, it's also a good experience for him na matikman po 'yung ganu'n ka-sweet na panalo. And mas ma-boost po siguro 'yung confidence niya."

For Carlos, the competition became more than another medal-winning performance. His two gold medals, his brother's bronze, and his experience during the vault qualification combined to make the Asian Games a particularly significant chapter in their sporting careers.

Carlos Yulo (born Carlos Edriel Poquiz Yulo) is a Filipino artistic gymnast widely celebrated as the greatest athlete in Philippine sports history. He became the country's first double Olympic gold medalist after winning both the floor exercise and vault events at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
