The singer, popularly known as “Mr. Pure Energy,” shared the story during his viral interview with the president on his UNSHAKEN podcast. Gary recalled meeting Mrs. Marcos three years ago, when she acknowledged his political preferences but emphasized that their differences did not have to prevent them from working toward the country’s welfare.
According to Gary, the First Lady approached him and brought up his support for the political opposition.
“She touched me on the knee and she goes, ‘I know you’re maka-pink.’

“And I go, ‘Yes, Ma’am, I am,’ and she goes, ‘Yeah, but you know, with us,’ referring to you, ‘with us for as long as what you are doing is for the good of our country and our countrymen, it doesn’t matter what color you support.’”
Gary’s account highlighted a message of understanding across political divides. Liza Marcos emphasized during their encounter that what mattered most was whether a person’s actions contributed to the well-being of the Philippines and its people.
The story resonated with the first lady, who later addressed the interview through a lengthy Instagram post. She revealed that Gary’s recollection had prompted an outpouring of messages from people who watched the conversation, including friends and individuals who had previously been on opposing sides.
“I must’ve received over a hundred messages from friends — and yes, even some from former foes 😅 — who watched 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗼’𝘀 𝙐𝙉𝙎𝙃𝘼𝙆𝙀𝙉 podcast with my husband.
“I still can’t believe 𝗠𝗿. 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 remembered a conversation we had 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗴𝗼. And yes… 𝙨𝙪𝙥𝙚𝙧 𝙠𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙜 𝙖𝙠𝙤! 🥹❤️ Thank you, Gary, for remembering not only my words, but the 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 behind them.”
She thanked the singer for recalling not only what she said but the underlying message she wanted to communicate. The First Lady then expanded on the meaning of their conversation, acknowledging that people naturally have different political affiliations, preferences and opinions.
“We may have different colors, different choices and different opinions — and that’s okay. 🇵🇭”
Liza Marcos argued that the country would benefit more if people devoted less time and energy to attacking one another and more attention to finding ways to help.
“But with so many challenges facing our country today — rising fuel prices, typhoons, floods, climate change and so much more — perhaps it’s time we spend 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 putting each other down and 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 asking ourselves, ‘𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙬𝙚 𝙙𝙤 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥?’ ❤️”
Her post encouraged Filipinos to redirect their attention from political disagreements toward practical ways of helping their fellow citizens, emphasizing that differences in political choices and opinions are acceptable.

Liza also urged people to reconsider the way they interact with those who disagree with them, expressing hope that the public could move beyond hostility and rediscover shared interests.
“Maybe it’s time to 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 one another… and 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. 🤝❤️🇵🇭”
She concluded her message by reminding the public that, despite their differences, Filipinos ultimately belong to the same nation.
“Because at the end of the day, 𝙞𝙞𝙨𝙖 𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙋𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙨 𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙣.”
The exchange has drawn attention to the possibility of maintaining respectful relationships despite political disagreements. Gary’s account portrayed Liza’s earlier message as an acknowledgment that people with different political preferences can still share a commitment to the country’s welfare.
