Robin Padilla paid tribute to late student-athlete Rene Baterbonia after sharing an update announcing that the young athlete’s remains had finally arrived in his hometown in Agusan del Sur.

The actor-politician reposted News5’s report, which stated that Baterbonia’s wake would be held at the Talacogon Gym in Agusan del Sur. According to a Facebook post from the local government unit of Talacogon, public viewing was scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

Along with the shared report, Padilla posted a lengthy and emotional message honoring the late student-athlete and reflecting on the hardships many Filipinos face while chasing success.

He described Baterbonia as someone who came from humble beginnings and worked hard to uplift his family from poverty.

“Isang mahirap na probinsyano ang nangarap at nagsumikap para maiangat ang kanyang pamilya sa paghihikahos,” Padilla wrote.

He said that success seemed to be within reach for the young athlete, who had journeyed from the mountains and islands of Mindanao to Luzon, where he said many believe the so-called “Filipino dream” is centered.

“Abot kamay ang tagumpay,” he said.
“Mula sa kabundukan at malayong Isla ng Mindanao ay narating niya ang Isla ng Luzon kung saan mismo naksentro ang tinatawag na ‘Filipino dream.’”

Padilla described that dream as one wrapped in promises passed on through generations.

“Isang pangarap na binalot ng pangako,” he wrote.
“Isang pangako na ipinamana ng mga mananakop sa mga tawid dagat na pilit inaabot ng kanilang bawat na henerasyon.”

The senator also praised Baterbonia’s love for his parents and siblings, saying it would keep his name alive and serve as a lesson for young Filipinos across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Padilla concluded by saying that Baterbonia’s sacrifice would become a reminder for Filipinos seeking opportunities away from home.

“Ang pag alay mo ng iyong buhay ay magsisilbing apoy sa dibdib ng bawat Pilipinong tawid dagat para manatiling gising sa katotohanan na ang Filipino dream ay wala sa Imperial Manila.”

His post drew attention online as many netizens expressed sympathy for Baterbonia and reflected on Padilla’s message regarding the struggles and aspirations of Filipinos from the provinces.
