According to investigators, the vehicle came from Quezon City and was supposed to deliver products to a grocery store in the area when the accident happened. Police said the driver allegedly dozed off, causing him to lose control of the van.

Police said four of the victims were reportedly dismantling scrap materials near a gutter to sell to a nearby junk shop.

A house and two neighboring stores also sustained damage in the incident.

One relative of a victim recalled rushing outside after hearing the loud impact.

“Nu’ng narinig ko na 'yung kumalampag, lumabas agad ako,” says Jovito Fernandez, a relative of one of the fatalities.

The driver, who survived along with his helper, is now under police custody.
