“Yun daw anak niya na kaaalis lang, nakabangga ng 18 years old, patay,” a barangay representative said while recounting the story told to the woman.

The caller supposedly asked for money and jewelry as compensation for the family of the person allegedly killed. The senior citizen was also reportedly instructed to keep the matter to herself.

Following those instructions, she gathered the valuables. She was told that a rider would collect them and deliver them to the supposed victim’s family.

About an hour after the handover, her daughter returned home. It was then that the elderly woman realized the call had been a scam.

The family subsequently contacted authorities. Citing the Sta. Mesa Police Station’s report, the news segment placed the value of the stolen cash and jewelry at nearly ₱500,000.

Family members declined to appear on camera. However, they expressed suspicion that someone they knew might have been involved because the call came through their private landline.

That suspicion remained an angle being examined. The report did not establish who made the call or confirm that the person was acquainted with the family.

Authorities also mentioned a similar incident in Sta. Mesa on October 7. In that case, a caller allegedly told another victim that their mother had been involved in an accident and urgently needed a large amount of money.

A rider likewise arrived to collect cash and jewelry. The valuables handed over in that incident were reportedly worth nearly ₱1.5 million.

GMA sought the Sta. Mesa Police Station’s comment on both cases, but police declined to give a statement while the investigation was ongoing.

The report also carried a reminder to verify alarming calls about relatives. Residents were urged to contact the family member concerned before handing over money or belongings.
