Duterte made the statement following the 128th Independence Day celebration in Davao City on Friday, where she was asked about her plans to reach out to the bereaved family.
According to the Vice President, she had already made inquiries regarding the arrangements of the wake in order to determine when and where she could properly pay her respects.
“Tinanong ko kung merong ah wake at burial ah wake dito sa Davao City,” she said.

She added that the family has not yet finalized the schedule for the funeral proceedings.
“At sinabi na hindi pa nila na-finalize yong burol.”
Duterte said she is open to visiting the family once the schedule is confirmed, stressing that she wants to ensure that her presence will not disrupt the grieving process.
“Kapag ah nandiyan na yung schedule ay titingnan namin kung saan pwede ah kung saan kami pwede makiramay sa pamilya,” she said.
The Vice President’s remarks came amid continued public attention on the deaths of Baterbonia and fellow student-athlete Divine Adili, whose passing has sparked calls for accountability and discussion on institutional response.
Baterbonia, a promising young athlete, previously represented the Davao Eagles in the Palarong Pambansa after earning an off-campus scholarship and later gaining admission to Ateneo de Davao University.
As of now, Duterte has not confirmed a final visit but reiterated her willingness to personally offer condolences once the wake arrangements are officially set.
Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio is currently defending her position against serious allegations of undisclosed wealth and the misuse of confidential funds, labels she has fiercely rejected while calling on Filipinos to fight internal government corruption. Amid an intense political fallout with the Marcos administration and a looming Senate trial, she has maintained a defiant stance by explicitly denying any intention to overthrow the President while simultaneously cementing her political future for a 2028 executive run.
In another report, Vice President Sara Duterte expressed disappointment over what she described as Ateneo de Manila University’s inadequate response following the deaths of two basketball players during a team-building activity. She said that schools should immediately communicate with and properly support grieving families in times of tragedy. Duterte emphasized that incidents involving student-athletes should not be treated as ordinary cases and called for greater sensitivity in handling the situation.
Meanwhile, Vice President Sara Duterte also expressed sympathy for the families of the late basketball players Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili following the tragic incident. She acknowledged the deep grief being experienced by the bereaved families and encouraged them to first focus on mourning and laying their loved ones to rest. Duterte further advised that legal guidance and pursuit of justice should be considered after the period of grief. Her remarks were shared as the families continue to cope with the devastating loss.
