Speaking after the 128th Independence Day celebration in Davao City on Friday, Duterte said she understands the pain currently being endured by the bereaved families and deliberately chose not to add to their burden.

“Hindi ko na lang gatungan yong ah pamilya kasi alam mo yong mahirap yung pinagdadaanan nila ngayon.”

She said the grief experienced by parents who have lost their children is something difficult to overcome.

“Araw-araw magigising ka na wala na yung anak mo.”

While expressing support for calls for accountability, Duterte said she believes the incident could have legal implications.

“Of course. Yes. Oo. As a lawyer, ah, actionable yung nangyari.”

However, she stressed that the families should first focus on the wake and burial of their loved ones before deciding on their next steps.

“Para sa akin, ah actionable talaga ah yung nangyari.”
“Dapat ah sila pagkatapos ng lahat ng kanilang kailangan gawin ah para sa burol at pagpapalibing ng kanilang anak ay ah umupo sila at ah mag-isip kung ano yung dapat na gawin nila para magbigyan ng hustisya yong kanilang anak.”

Duterte further encouraged them to seek proper legal advice.

“Gawin nila, ibig ko sabihin gawin nila legally at magkonsulta ng abogado.”
