In a report by Ivan Mayrina of GMA 7 in '24 Oras Weekend,' the employers of the suspect were shocked that their gate was left open and their babysitter was already nowhere to be found.
Even the cabinet where they were hiding their cash and jewelries were left open.
The victims tried contacting the suspect, but she was no longer answering. According to the same report, the victims only found the suspect babysitter on social media.
They already filed a blotter and reported the incident to the police. They'd also try to coordinate with the local government where the suspect was believed to be residing.
In the Philippines, if an employee steals money and jewelry from their employer, the crime is generally classified as qualified theft under the Revised Penal Code.
Qualified theft happens when the offender is a domestic servant or if the theft is committed with grave abuse of confidence, which fits situations involving house helpers, babysitters, or employees trusted by their employers.
This crime carries a heavier penalty than simple theft because of the trust that was broken. The employee can face criminal charges and, if found guilty, may be sentenced to several years in prison depending on the value of what was stolen.
Aside from criminal liability, the court may also order the employee to return the stolen items or pay their value as civil liability.
