In an Instagram post, Montes described the honor as one of the most meaningful recognitions she has received. She shared how growing up with a deaf mother taught her the importance of compassion and standing up for people who experience discrimination.

"I can truly say that this is one of the most special and meaningful recognitions I have ever received. Growing up with a deaf mom, I experienced firsthand what it means to be her voice and ears in our everyday lives. From helping her communicate with other people to protecting her from judgment, discrimination, and bullying, it was never an easy journey," she wrote.

"I remember crying for my Mama because of how other people treated her. There was even a time when I didn’t want to be seen with her — not because I was ashamed of her, but because hearing people whisper, laugh, and mock her broke my heart. As a child, I couldn’t understand why people could be so unkind to someone simply because she couldn’t hear or speak like they did," Julia shared.

Through her message, Montes encouraged people to look beyond disabilities and recognize the dignity and worth of every individual. She emphasized that people with disabilities deserve the same consideration and opportunities to be included in society.

"People with disabilities may have different abilities, but they are no less than anyone else. They have the same feelings, dreams, dignity, and right to be treated with kindness and respect. Let us never belittle someone because of their disability. Instead, let us learn to understand, include, and respect them," she said.

You may not hear the words I say, but I hope you always feel how proud I am to be your daughter. Thank you, PADI, for 100 years of service, advocacy, and love for the Deaf community. 🤟💙 Deafness is not a limitation to being loved, respected, and valued."
