The content creator shared her family story during an exclusive interview with Kara David for the video podcast I-Listen. She looked back on their humble beginnings and how her mother’s hard work helped shape the life she has today.
Sassa revealed that her mother had already been working as a domestic worker before she was born. Esther left Samar at just 16 to look for work in Manila, where she eventually met Sassa’s father.
“Hindi pa ako pinapanganak, katulong na si Mama. Si mother kasi, umalis siya sa kanila 16 years old pa lang. Galing siyang Samar,” she said.

Sassa jokingly recalled how her parents met, saying:
“Na-thirst trap niya ang Papa ko. Ayon na, ako na 'yon.”
Growing up in the same household where her mother worked, Sassa initially did not understand that Esther was employed there. She only realized it later after seeing her mother doing household chores.
“Eventually, na-gets ko na rin na may trabaho pala rito si Mama. Okay na-realize ko na kasambahay siya,” she described.
Although Sassa never considered her mother’s occupation shameful, she admitted that she once pretended at school that their family owned the house.
“Sa school, may mga time na gusto ko magpaka-social climber. Ang sinasabi ko, 'Kami ang may-ari ng bahay na 'yan!'” she narrated.
As she grew older, however, Sassa became more comfortable telling people the truth. She said she eventually became proud of her mother after realizing how hard she worked despite not having had the opportunity to study.
“Yung nanay ko napagtapos niya ako ng college sa pagkakasambahay; at single mom lang siya,” she proudly said.
Sassa also spoke about her mother’s support for her identity. While Esther accepted her, she remained concerned that her daughter might experience bullying or violence again.
“Yes, nanay ko talaga yung supportive sa kabaklaan ko,” she said.
According to Sassa, her mother made it clear that her happiness and authenticity mattered most.
“Kung saan ka masaya, at kung saan yung ikaliligaya mo kung sino ka talaga. Doon ako susuporta."
Sassa also emphasized the importance of honest communication between parents and LGBTQIA+ children. She acknowledged that discussing identity and personal struggles with parents can be difficult, but said openness can help both sides understand each other better.
“Nasa communication talaga at pagiging honest sa parents ninyo,” Sassa said.
Looking back, Sassa said she has developed an even deeper appreciation for her mother’s sacrifices. She recalled how Esther rarely had the chance to rest, travel, or simply enjoy time for herself because she was focused on providing for her.

“Hindi ko nakita ang nanay ko na nagbakasyon, naglakwatsa, o nagpahinga,” she said.
