Barbie Forteza revealed that her decision to pursue acting can be traced back to her childhood admiration for Sharon Cuneta, whom she considered a major inspiration long before they eventually worked together.

During her appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Friday, August 28, Barbie Forteza revealed that her decision to pursue acting began when she was only eight years old.

The Kapuso actress recalled being captivated by a performance she watched as a child, which made her realize that she wanted to become an actress herself.

"Kaya po ako naging aktres dahil po sa kanya. Siya po ang dahilan kung bakit ginusto kong maging artista," she said.

Barbie shared that she was watching Madrasta with her mother, who was a fan of Sharon Cuneta, when one of the actress’ scenes caught her attention.

"When I was eight years old, my mom was watching 'Madrasta' kasi Sharonian po ang nanay ko. Tapos nakita ko po 'yung eksena niya na 'I was never your partner, I'm just your wife.' Tapos sobrang na-hook ako sa kanya."

What struck Barbie most was the emotional depth of the performance, even though she was still too young to relate to the experiences portrayed in the scene.

"'Yung performance niya, it felt so real, na kahit bata ako at hindi pa ako nagiging madrasta, wala pa kong napagdaanang heartbreak sa buhay, naramdaman ko siya doon, 'yung level of truth and depth ni Ms. Sharon Cuneta."

That childhood admiration eventually became a firm decision to pursue acting, making her current opportunity to work with Sharon particularly meaningful.

"So sabi ko, 'Mama, gusto ko 'yung ginagawa niya.' As young as eight years old, na ganu'n ka-firm 'yung desisyon ko because of Ms. Sharon. So it really comes full circle now na I'm working with her," she added.

Barbie also spoke about her experience working with Sharon in Honor Thy Mother, describing the veteran actress as generous and brilliant when it comes to delivering emotions during their scenes.

"She's that generous. She's that brilliant na talagang nabibigay n'ya 'yung tamang emosyon na dapat kung mailabas."

Beyond their work, Barbie said Sharon has also shown genuine care toward her and the rest of the people on set. She revealed that Sharon has allowed her to call her “mama,” which has made their relationship even more meaningful.

"Tapos sobra po siyang mag-alaga sa akin, sa aming lahat sa set. So kahit 'yung pagmamahal ko rin po sa kanya nagiging totoo. Kaya very defensive din 'yung pagtanaw ko ng resentment towards her. Nagiging mas malalim kasi nga 'yung love ko na sa kanya totoo na."

For Barbie, working alongside someone who inspired her acting dream as a child has turned a childhood admiration into a meaningful full-circle experience.

Hailing from Biñan, Laguna, Barbara "Barbie" Forteza commuted to auditions in Manila alongside her mother before getting her major break at age twelve as Young Jodi in the 2009 adaptation of Stairway to Heaven. Dubbed GMA’s "Kapuso Primetime Princess," the award-winning actress went on to headline major television hits like The Half Sisters, Maria Clara at Ibarra, and Pulang Araw.

In another report, Barbie Forteza and Sassa Gurl shared their contrasting views on whether keeping an ex-partner’s belongings is acceptable. Sassa revealed that she had recently returned the things left by her former partner, while Barbie said there are situations where she would be willing to hold on to something an ex gave her. However, she pointed out that there is one important condition before deciding to keep such an item, reminding people to make sure it has already been completely paid for.

Meanwhile, Barbie Forteza opened up about stepping outside her usual boundaries for her role as Cherry in “Saving Cherry.” She described the character as the boldest and most daring role she has played so far, crediting director Ivan Andrew Payawal for giving the cast enough freedom to interpret their scenes in their own way. Barbie said she drew from a more uninhibited side of herself to portray Cherry, making the role a particularly mature challenge in her career. “Saving Cherry,” which also stars Khalil Ramos alongside a star-studded cast, is scheduled to open in cinemas nationwide on September 2.
