Actress Meryll Soriano opened up about one of the most difficult periods of her life as she recalled the lowest point of her past drug use and how it eventually began affecting something she deeply valued—her career.

Meryll discussed her history of substance use during the latest episode of Kapamilya broadcast journalist Karen Davila’s vlog on Thursday, August 27. Their conversation also touched on Meryll’s experience with bipolar disorder and her journey toward sobriety.
According to the actress, she was 25 years old when she became pregnant with her son, Eli, and also began her journey toward sobriety. She revealed that she has now been sober for 19 years.
“So, 19 years sober na ako,” Meryll said.

The actress clarified that alcohol was never the substance she became dependent on. Instead, she said her struggle involved chemical drúgs, which she believed contributed to the worsening of her bipolar disorder.
“Kasi siyempre,” she continued.
“mayro’n na nga akong chemical imbalance, lalo ko pang pinalala because of that.”
Davila then asked Meryll about the lowest point of her drug use, prompting the actress to identify a moment when its effects began to spill into her professional life.
“I think no’ng naapektuhan na ‘yong trabaho ko. E, mataas ang respeto ko sa work ko. Lumaki ako na nakita ko ang tita ko [Maricel Soriano] na mataas ang respeto sa work,” Meryll recalled.
Her answer highlighted how seriously she viewed acting, particularly because she grew up surrounded by veteran performers and witnessed firsthand the discipline expected in the industry.
“Na-train ako ng mga veteran actors on set like Charito Solis. Lumaki ako in very disciplined era in acting,” she added.
Despite having Maricel Soriano, one of Philippine showbiz’s most respected actresses, as her aunt, Meryll said she did not feel pressured by the comparison. Instead, her upbringing and experiences on set helped shape her own strong sense of responsibility toward her profession.
