The issue surfaced during the House Committee on Appropriations hearing on Monday, August 24, where lawmakers discussed regulations surrounding the promotion of online gᾰmbling. Ivana’s name was mentioned in connection with a promotional campaign involving the distribution of 100 iPhone 17 units for an online gaming company.

San Fernando later addressed the matter through a Facebook post, explaining that his criticism was not directed personally at Ivana or at any assistance she may have provided. Instead, he emphasized his opposition to the promotion of online gᾰmbling through social media platforms.

“Itong si Ms. Ivana Alawi naman e nagsumbong agad. Naging example lang sa budget hearing e pinatira na ako ng fake news sa mga vlogger,” San Fernando said in his post.

He subsequently clarified the focus of his criticism, stressing that the concern was the promotion of gᾰmbling and its potential impact on ordinary Filipinos.

“Linawin ko lang: hindi naman ikaw, Ivana, o kung ano mang pagtulong mo ang mali kundi ANG PAG PROMOTE NIYO NG SUGAL na LUMILINTA at PUMEPESTE sa PINAGHIRAPANG PERA ng mga MANGGAGAWA at ordinaryong Pilipino,” he added.

San Fernando also pointed out that his own social media page has not carried advertisements or been monetized since 2024, while strongly stating his opposition to promoting online gᾰmbling.

“Mula 2024, walang ads at hindi naka-monetize itong page ko. At kahit kelan DI AKO MAGPOPROMOTE ng pesteng online sugal gaya niyo,” the lawmaker said.

According to San Fernando, the promotional campaign involving Ivana illustrated the broader concern surrounding content creators who may reach large audiences while promoting online gᾰmbling.

He argued that influencers and vloggers should be closely monitored because of their substantial following and ability to reach a wide segment of the public.

The discussion comes as lawmakers continue examining how online gᾰmbling promotions are presented across social media and whether existing regulations are sufficient to address the growing reach of such campaigns.

Ivana Alawi is a Filipino-Moroccan actress, model, and internet personality who rose to massive popularity as one of the Philippines' top digital content creators with over 17 million YouTube subscribers. Beyond her viral lifestyle vlogs and television roles, she is a beauty entrepreneur behind her own skincare brand, Yours Skin, and is widely known for her large-scale philanthropic work and charity giveaways.

In another report, Ivana Alawi spoke about the ongoing flooding crisis while attention remained focused on the controversy surrounding her cellphone giveaway. She shared that she was helping prepare relief packages for people affected by the floods and questioned the country’s flood control efforts, particularly the billions of pesos allocated to these projects. Her comments came after PAGCOR imposed a ₱1-million penalty on the online gaming company connected to the promotional campaign and ordered the promotion stopped.

Meanwhile, Jojo Bragais issued a warning after discovering a fraudulent Telegram account allegedly using his identity to offer a fake film casting opportunity. The scam reportedly asked interested individuals to submit videos, while a screenshot from the exchange even mentioned Ivana Alawi as part of the supposed production. Bragais clarified that he is not currently producing any film and urged the public to avoid communicating with the account or responding to its requests.
