The actress discussed the deeply personal experience during an interview with Karmina Constantino on KC After Hours. Rather than immediately informing her mother about the diagnosis, Kaye and her sister, Sarah, carefully considered how they could eventually break the news without causing her mother severe worry.

Kaye explained that she was particularly concerned because her mother had high blood pressure and might physically struggle with the shock of hearing that her daughter had cancer.

“Pinlano namin ng sister ko na paano natin sasabihin na hindi na siya magwo-worry? Kasi if sisimulan ko from the start, na ‘Ma, alam mo ba ganito, na-diagnosed ako,’ baka mag-palpitate eh high blood,” she shared.

Because of those concerns, Kaye decided that she would wait until her treatment was finished and she could tell her mother that she had already recovered.

“So inisip ko paano ko sasabihin sa kanya? Uunahin ko na tapos na, okay na ako,” she recalled.

The sisters eventually came up with a unique way of revealing what Kaye had gone through. The actress had a pink ribbon tattoo associated with breast cancer awareness and survivorship, which she planned to show to her mother as part of the revelation.

“Sige, magpapa-tattoo ako then ipapakita natin sa kanya,” she recounted.

However, the plan did not immediately work as expected because Cecil initially failed to understand the significance of the tattoo.

“So finally, in-explain ko, ‘Ma, ibig sabihin niya survivor ka.’ ‘Ah, so bakit ka meron?’ Kasi nga survivor ako. Clueless siya, hindi niya ma-gets,” Kaye recalled.

Kaye eventually had to tell her mother directly that she had battled cancer.

Sabi niya, 'Ha?’ Tapos tumingin na siya sa sister ko. Sabi niya, 'Sarah, hindi ko alam.’ Sabi ni Sarah, yes, that's why hindi namin sinabi kasi you will react that way, you will worry,” she shared.

Her mother cried after learning the truth, although Kaye said they initially tried to keep the conversation light.

“Umiyak lang siya for a while. Kasi nga we took it very light,” she said.

The emotional impact became even clearer several days later. By then, Kaye had already returned to Cebu, and her mother had more time to process what her daughter had endured without her knowledge.

“After two days, nakabalik na ako ng Cebu, tumawag [siya]... umiiyak. Sabi niya, ‘I am so happy, Kaye. Ang bait-bait ni Lord sa'yo. Okay ka na, pinagaling ka niya,’” she recalled.

Kaye acknowledged that her decision could understandably be viewed as unfair, particularly now that she is also a parent. She recognized that a mother would naturally want to know when her child is facing a serious health struggle.

“I think dun lang nag-sink in sa kanya na, ‘Hala, anak ko nagka-cancer, wala ako.’ Which is unfair... Yes, I am unfair because kung tayo may anak at may sakit, may pinagdadaanan, we would want to know. We would want to be there for them,” she said.

Despite recognizing that perspective, Kaye maintained that her decision was driven by concern for her mother's well-being. At the time, she believed shielding Cecil from months of anxiety was more important than receiving additional emotional support from her.

“But inisip ko talaga 'yung health niya more than 'yung strength or 'yung warmth and the care na makukuha ko from her,” she explained.

Kaye also shared that seeing her loved ones remain happy and free from worry became a source of strength throughout her own journey. For her, protecting her family emotionally was part of how she managed to keep moving forward.

“Mas gugustuhin kong makita kitang okay. Dun ako humuhugot ng lakas na nakikita ko silang lahat na okay, na dun ako kukuha ng lakas na I still want to be with them, with my family," she remarked.
