Sen. Robin Padilla has broken his silence on why he did not attend the fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., saying his decision was rooted in both personal respect and political circumstances.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Padilla addressed speculations claiming that his absence was a sign of disrespect toward the President. He stressed that his relationship with Marcos goes beyond politics and dates back to the latter's return to the Philippines.
"Si Pangulong Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. ay naging personal kong kaibigan mula pa noong panahon ng kanyang pagbabalik sa Pilipinas."
The senator explained that although he is now part of the political opposition following his departure from the UniTeam alliance, he has never allowed political differences to affect his personal friendship with Marcos.

Padilla also revisited the events surrounding the 2024 SONA, when his lack of applause and visible reaction during parts of the speech drew public attention. According to him, he wanted to avoid creating a similar situation this year.
"Iniwasan ko na muling makakuha ng pansin o 'umagaw ng eksena' tulad noong nakaraang 2024 SONA, kung saan may mga pagkakataong habang nagpapalakpakan at nagpapakita ng pagpupugay ang mga tao ay nanatili lamang akong nakaupo at walang reaksyon."
He added that he did not want another incident that could affect his friendship with the President.
"Hindi ko na mairerekomenda na mauwi muli sa ganoong sitwasyon ang aming ugnayan bilang magkaibigan."
Padilla further emphasized that the State of the Nation Address belongs to the President and should not be overshadowed by political opposition.
"Ang SONA ay araw ng Pangulo; ito ay kanyang pagkakataon na mag-ulat sa bayan."
He also wrote that there was no sufficient reason for the opposition to take attention away from the President during such an important national event.
Toward the end of his statement, Padilla shared that he watched the speech on television and appreciated that President Marcos primarily used the Filipino language, saying it gave greater recognition to ordinary Filipinos.
His explanation came after online discussions questioned his absence from this year's SONA, with the senator insisting that his decision was made out of respect rather than hostility.
