Carmina Villaroel believes the strength of her more than two-decade relationship with husband Zoren Legaspi comes not from a secret formula but from a daily decision to keep choosing each other. Speaking on the program Hot Takes, the actress reflected on the values that have helped sustain their marriage despite the challenges they have encountered over the years.

The couple, who have been together for more than 25 years and married since 2012, are parents to twins Mavy and Cassy Legaspi. Throughout the years, they have become one of the country's most admired celebrity couples because of their enduring relationship.
For Carmina, the foundation of their marriage lies in sharing the same goal of making it work.
"Siguro parang mukha siyang madali kasi pareho naming gusto ni Zoren na mag-work 'yung relationship. Actually, effort naman kasi 'yan eh. Dapat both parties, dapat effort 'yan pero it comes naturally. Ayokong gamitin 'yung word na effort [purely] kasi parang nag-eeffort ka eh, parang napipilitan ka. Pero sa amin ni Zoren, it comes naturally. Maybe because – given na 'yung pagmamahal eh, the love is there, the trust – pero siguro dahil pareho naming gusto [and] we want this marriage to work, so it comes naturally."

She also emphasized the importance of placing God at the center of their marriage.
"Tsaka siguro, importante na si God 'yung nasa center ng relationship niyo kasi pag si God talaga 'yung nasa center ng relationship niyo, kahit ano pang bagyo ang dumaan, kahit ano pang pagsubok, trials, o failures, ma-o-overcome ninyo 'yan eh."
According to Carmina, relationships should never feel forced.
"Alam niyo 'yung effort na effortless? It comes naturally."
She explained that constantly forcing oneself—or a partner—can become unhealthy, adding that couples should naturally work on their relationship every single day.
Another major factor, she said, is maintaining open communication. Although she acknowledged that no marriage is perfect, she shared that she and Zoren have always made it a habit to discuss anything openly, whether it involves their relationship or their children.
"Kailangan bukas palagi 'yung communication [lines] mo. I'm not saying that we're perfect, but since kami, dahil very open 'yung communication lines namin, we talk about anything under the sun, anytime of the day. We're very open kahit sa mga anak namin, so siguro 'yun yung maganda sa amin."
Addressing the common belief that romance fades over time, Carmina expressed a different opinion.
"Yung spark, dapat hindi mawala eh. I don't believe na it fades, siguro parang it evolves."
She said the excitement may change as couples grow older, but it transforms into a deeper sense of comfort and security. She described Zoren as the person who keeps her grounded whenever she feels anxious.
"Hindi dapat mawala [yung spark]. Nandiyan lang 'yan. Nag-eevolve sa iba't ibang mga ways. Tapos siguro, ang maganda kasi – it takes two to tango. So kailangan talaga na you really work in your relationship."
"Kung talagang gusto mo at nire-respeto mo 'yung relationship na 'yun, you'll work on it every day. You don't take [it] for granted."
Carmina admitted there are moments when she unintentionally takes her husband for granted because he is naturally quiet. Whenever she realizes it, however, she intentionally becomes more affectionate and expresses her love through her own love languages.
She also praised Zoren for consistently showing his love through actions rather than words.
"Talagang mararamdaman mo na I am important. Mararamdaman mo na mahal niya ako. Mararamdaman mo na he really cares for me and the family. He doesn't say it all the time, but we know through his actions. Nararamdaman ko talaga 'yun."
For Carmina, sustaining romance still comes down to communication, spending time together, and showing genuine interest in each other's passions.
